The ninth of December, 1899 was just like any other day in Carbonado, Washington. The residents arose to a wet, dreary, typical Pacific Northwest late fall day, but before the day was over the lives of all the town’s residents had changed forever. Some live were snuffed out, others could have been except they weren’t where they should have been. Many wives were mad widows, and children became orphans. The survivors lost best friends, and best friends became orphans and had to move.

Not all the tragedies took place in Carbonado. All mines had mishaps where men died, but the worst tragedies took place in Burnett and Carbonado. This is a book of Tragedies; a book about life around the turn of the century in the mining section of Pierce County.
